How Prayer Times & Islamic Dates Are Calculated

Content reviewed:

A timetable depends on the place, date and calculation settings. Here is how to read the figures and compare them with your local timetable.

Location and local time

City times use the listed latitude, longitude and IANA timezone. Each date uses its own UTC offset, including daylight saving changes. Homepage location search opens the nearest catalogue city; the location control on a timetable can use your device coordinates. Check the place and timezone shown.

Sun position and prayer starts

The solar calculation follows NOAA’s published equations. Sunrise and sunset use a standard solar altitude of −0.833°. Fajr and angle-based Isha use the selected twilight angles. These calculations do not include a measured local horizon or building obstruction.

Asr and personal adjustments

Standard Asr uses a shadow factor of 1 and Hanafi Asr a factor of 2, in addition to the noon shadow. This choice is separate from the calculation method. Your minute adjustments are added after the method’s built-in adjustments.

Rounding and the Sehri cutoff

Prayer starts round up to the next minute. Sunrise and the Sehri cutoff round down. Sehri and displayed Fajr may therefore differ by one minute. Dhuhr includes the selected method’s post-noon adjustment; it is not a universal waiting period.

High latitudes and missing events

If the sun does not reach a required altitude, the corresponding time remains unavailable. The app does not silently substitute a different high-latitude rule. Use guidance from the local authority when the calculated event is unavailable.

Nawafil planning conventions

Tahajjud is displayed from the previous night’s Isha to the selected morning’s Fajr cutoff, with the last third of the night shown separately. Ishraq begins 20 minutes after calculated sunrise. Chasht begins halfway between sunrise and solar noon; both end 10 minutes before solar noon. Awwabin runs from Maghrib to Isha. These are the app’s planning conventions, not universal religious boundaries.

Hijri dates and Ramadan announcements

The calendar uses the arithmetic Islamic civil calendar, not live moon observations. Islamic evenings begin at sunset; displayed date grids use Gregorian dates. Ramadan and Eid estimates can differ from local announcements. Sourced regional announcements retain their own authority, scope and validity.

Names, sources and corrections

Meaning, linguistic origin, regional spelling and historical association are checked as separate claims. A commonly reported interpretation is kept distinct from a confirmed derivation. Names with unresolved evidence are not presented as newly verified. A correction should include the exact spelling and a specific reference.

Indonesia / Kemenag (angle preset)20°18°Dhuhr +1;

Calculated presets are not official mosque timetables. Prayer starts round up; Sunrise and Sehri cutoff round down. A one-minute difference between Sehri cutoff and displayed Fajr can therefore occur. Dhuhr includes a visible post-noon margin; for Umm al-Qura and Kemenag, +1 minute is our app policy, not an official rule. Personal offsets are additional. Missing polar events remain unavailable.

Choose the Ramadan interval using your local calendar. This applies to every date in the selected timetable; it does not automatically detect Ramadan. Other methods ignore this setting.
